Skill Injection Scanner
Scan a SKILL.md package for prompt injection and secret exfiltration before you install or publish an agent skill. Most malicious instructions hide in the natural-language prose, not the code.

Format: Agent skill, not a browser app. Agensi provides agent-connected access; separately offered downloads use a local package setup. You need an AI agent that can load its instructions and use the required tools.
Package requirements: Local Python 3.12+ and permission to read a stable package copy. Tested with Python 3.12.14. No network calls or package edits.
You get: File-and-line findings with rule and severity; source excerpts are withheld. Incomplete inputs are reported as CANNOT_ASSESS.

Agensi access: A bounded synthetic test through Agensi in Claude retrieved and ran the scanner helper before this package update. It distinguished risky, clean and missing inputs. The v1.1.1 update preserves scanner behavior and renames fixture entry files; the updated delivery has not been independently replayed. Local setup examples apply to separately obtained downloadable packages.
See what the scanner brings to the surface
This illustrative SKILL.md excerpt shows the published heuristic categories. Findings are review prompts, not proof that a package is malicious or safe.
- flagImperative instructions hidden in an HTML comment.
- flagEnvironment-variable-to-URL exfiltration wording.
- reviewRemote content is treated as trusted instructions.
- reviewNetwork, browser, and file-write access are requested without a narrow scope.
What happens next: inspect the cited wording, verify the package source and revision, and review any scripts and permissions separately. A clean pattern scan is never a safety certificate.
What it flags
- Env-variable-to-URL exfiltration wording.
- Conditional triggers with hidden side effects.
- Instructions buried in HTML comments.
- Zero-width characters.
- Base64 and long-token blobs.
- Remote content treated as instructions.
- Unsafe-command references.
- Overbroad tool requests.
Audit the whole package
A clean pattern scan is not a safety certificate. Use the nine-step SKILL.md security checklist to verify provenance, scripts, permissions, network access, sandbox behavior, and the exact revision you install.
Installing with GitHub CLI?
Use the safe gh skill workflow to preview the complete package, select the intended agent and scope, pin the release you reviewed, and check updates before replacing it. Then scan the installed folder before enabling it in a credentialed workspace.
How to run
Point it at a stable local skill folder. The scanner reads Markdown and YAML using Python 3.12 or newer, with no network calls or package edits. Scripts, binaries, and runtime behavior need separate review.
Good to know
This is heuristic. It cannot prove a package is safe and may flag benign security documentation for review. The scanner withholds source excerpts from reports and marks incomplete inputs as CANNOT_ASSESS. File paths may still be sensitive. NO_MATCHES means only that no rule matched the inspected scope.
Is Skill Injection Scanner the right skill?
Best fit
You have a stable local copy of a skill package and want to review suspicious Markdown or YAML instructions before enabling it.
It returns
File-and-line findings with rule and severity; source excerpts are withheld. Incomplete inputs are reported as CANNOT_ASSESS.
Do not use it as
Certifying a skill as safe, scanning Python or shell code, or providing runtime protection.
