Etsy's new AI rules: check the product, then the pictures

What Etsy's October 22 AI changes mean for digital downloads, POD mockups and functional guides, plus a practical way to review your existing listings.

Etsy's October 22 update calls for a closer look at both what you're selling and how you show it. AI-generated functional guides are prohibited, while image requirements depend on the product type. Existing listings need attention too. Start with the files and photographs buyers actually receive or rely on, before rewriting descriptions. Read Etsy's announcement.

A policy update can turn a perfectly ordinary afternoon into a hunt through folders named final, final-new and use-this-one. The useful question is which version belongs to which listing, and whether the evidence still matches. That's a manageable review, provided you resist changing everything at once.

Separate the product question from the photo question

Etsy still permits seller-prompted AI artwork with individual creative involvement and disclosure. Its restriction on functional instructions reaches patterns, recipes, plans and guides that tell buyers how to accomplish a task. Adding an AI disclosure doesn't make those instructions eligible. Etsy's AI guidance explains the distinction.

Here's a hypothetical example: a printable household binder contains blank contact pages and a bonus repair guide. Reviewing only the cover would miss the important question. Open the bonus file, establish how the directions were authored, and assess it separately. A different title won't resolve a problem inside the download.

Don't send every product back to the photography table

Most physical products need an unedited photograph of the actual item. But Etsy makes room for authorized stock mockups of original designs on standard POD products. Visual digital downloads should show a preview or excerpt; nonvisual downloads can use nonmisleading representative imagery. Patterns and similar products need a real, unedited result photo. These distinctions are in the product-type image rules.

For a hypothetical printable planner, a clear excerpt from the current PDF is useful evidence. A beautifully staged image of pages that aren't in the download creates a different problem. Keep the source PDF and the gallery preview together so the next revision doesn't leave an old promise on display.

Try a small, honest listing review

Pick a handful of listings with different product types. For each one, put the following in a simple row:

  • What's supplied: the actual files, physical item or customization, including every supplement.
  • What supports the gallery: the original photo, current excerpt, mockup permission or real-result image, with its file location.
  • What's unresolved: missing source material, uncertain authorship or a preview that belongs to an older version.

Save the current listing and files before preparing changes. If an image changes, check which listings use it. If a download changes, revisit its previews. For larger folders, our Image-to-SKU Match Checker can help with filename-to-roster mismatches; it doesn't inspect image authenticity or decide Etsy eligibility.

Keep questions attached to the affected item instead of burying them in a general to-do list. “Find the original photograph for this mug” gives you a next action. “Check AI compliance” mostly gives you another afternoon of tabs.

Keep the next revision from undoing the review

Our free Etsy Listing Evidence Preflight is available on Agensi for this repeat-review job. It helps an agent keep file identities, attributed observations and unresolved questions together. Change a download or preview, and the next run can flag the changed file before the agent updates the evidence record.

It isn't a browser app or an automatic shop audit. Your agent needs file access, Python and suitable tools to inspect the material you supply. You still decide what the evidence means. The Agensi-delivered files passed 25 synthetic execution checks in Claude on October 23. That is a workflow test, not a tested seller outcome or an Etsy compliance finding.

This is a suggested review workflow, not a report of a tested shop result or an Etsy approval service. A file hash can confirm that two files match; it can't prove who created the content. Where authorship, rights or product classification remains uncertain, leave that question open for informed human review.

Start with the listing you can actually finish checking. A small set of well-supported corrections is more useful than a fresh layer of reassuring copy over files you haven't opened.
